STORY UNFOLDING
She saw the old house first, half hidden in the heavy maple branches, as she crested the hill. She turned her eyes to the right and noticed the country store and the people gathered on its porch. She'd been pedaling for what seemed like hours, actually not quite two, and she was tired and thirsty. She glanced from the store back to the house. It was then she noticed the gravestones in the side yard.

ART FOR ART'S SAKE
Beginning fellowship at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont, June 20, 2009.
L'art pour l'art" (translated as "art for art's sake") is credited to Théophile Gautier (1811–1872). Gautier, not first to use this phrase. Art, separate from sentimentalism — going against thought that the value of art was to serve moral or didactic purpose.
