ART FOR ART'S SAKE

Beginning fellowship at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont, June 20, 2009.

L'art pour l'art" (translated as "art for art's sake") is credited to Théophile Gautier (1811–1872). Gautier, not first to use this phrase.  Art, separate from sentimentalism  — going against thought that the value of art was to serve moral or didactic purpose.
